Eugene Crawford

pop-crawfordEugene “Pop pop” Crawford born March 31,1924 to Juluis and Allonia Crawford in Abeville South Carolina departed this life peacefully Saturday October 8, 2016 at Chesnut hill Hospitial.
He leaves to cherish is memory, his wife Jessie Crawford, two daughters,nine grandchildren,twenty-six great-granchildren, twenty- seven great great grandchildren  a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He moved to Philadelphia while in his early 20’s and married Jessie Marie Overton. Determined to earn a decent living to support his family,  he became a construction worker serving as a member of laborers local union 332 for over 49 year in which during that time had a hand in construction of the Gallery (9th and Market street), Martin Luther King HS (6100Stenton avenue) and Martin Luther King Recreatin Center (21st and Cecil B Moore avenue) just to name a few.He joined the masons masonic temple in the 1940’s and later became the Grandmaster of St. Johns Lodge (15th and Girard avenue) He was very proud of his accomplishments. Pop pop was also a member of Faith Baptist Emmanuel Church (29th and York streets) for more than 50 years serving as a deacon.
He loved fishing, hunting and baseball. His favorite team was our Philadelphia Philly’s. he often would sit in front of his home and listen to the baseball games on his radio while eating peanuts and talking to the neighbors.He alwashad a funny story to tell or some advice for those who seeked it. Everybody knew Mr. Crawford. He traveled a lot over the yearsand visited his family in south Carolina often. Family was important to him. Pop pop was a loving, kind and caring man. Never raising his voice and always willing to help someone in need. Often times, sacraficing his own needs.The past three years, he resided with his granddaughter Sharon and suffered from Alzheimner’s diease. During this time he remained eager to help even thoough his gait was unsteady.He always said “Thankyou” and ” I appreciate what you are doing” he always had a funny saying or a joke to tell. He will be missed.
A memorial service for Eugene Crawford will be held Wednesday October 18, 2016 at Faith Baptist Emmanuel Church at 10:00am. the church is located at 29th and york street, Philadelphia, Pa 19121.
